EU Could Respond to ‘Unwarranted’ US Visa Bans, Official States
The EU could “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it deems “unjustified” travel bans imposed by the United States on five European individuals working on combating digital hatred and misinformation, an EU official has said.
EU Officials Decry US Move as ‘Intimidation’
Officials from Europe including Emmanuel Macron charged the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, after the travel bans targeted individuals who have been at the heart of campaigns to enact legislation regulating American tech companies.
“For far too long, European activists have spearheaded organised efforts to coerce American platforms to punish US perspectives they disagree with,” wrote the US secretary of state online. “The current administration will not stand for such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”
Broad Criticism Across Europe
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined the French president in condemning the decision.
The bans were enacted this week against a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as four activists fighting false information, from two in Germany and two in the UK.
A Deepening Dispute Over Regulation
This European legislation is seen by Washington as a type of speech restriction, whereas European leaders contend the rules are essential to combat inflammatory language and disinformation.
This disagreement threatens to become part of a much broader existing cultural and political conflict between Washington and Europe.
