Balloons carrying thousands of packs of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as Vilnius Airport was forced to close for an extended period when dozens of them entered the country's airspace.
Flight Disruptions
The operational halt led to 30 flight cancellations impacting six thousand travelers, with airport representatives alerting that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.
Law Enforcement Actions
Authorities reported that 25 meteorological balloons were observed crossing into Lithuania from neighboring Belarus, with two balloons ending up precisely above the airport's airspace.
Approximately 14 of the weather balloons sent during the weekend drifted across the capital region, which is home to Lithuania's main urban center and adjacent to the border with Belarus.
Smuggled Items Retrieved
A minimum of 11 balloons transporting 18,000 packs of illegal tobacco products have since been recovered, though this number could rise, according to law enforcement authorities.
Cross-Border Contraband Trend
While creating issues, officials emphasized that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - Belarusian smoking products - are not unusual in neighboring countries."
So far this year, numerous meteorological balloons have been observed infiltrating Lithuania from Belarus, while 966 were noted during the prior year.
Cross-Border Effects
At the same time, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has recorded more than numerous instances in which illegal goods were transported from its adjacent country employing the meteorological equipment.
Criminal Methodology
When questioned about why criminal organizations employ a method that is highly susceptible to weather conditions rather than more controllable drones, representatives elaborated that "Atmospheric equipment are simple mechanisms used by illegal traders - they are cheaper than drones for moving tobacco products from Belarus."
Border Protection Aims
Officials added that "Our services' aim is to capture the greatest possible volumes of smuggled items and to detain organisers and participants so that this activity become economically unsustainable and do not pose risk to civil aviation."
Regional Security Context
The recent incidents occur during a time of increased concerns in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have caused air traffic disruption across the region.
Recent incidents in adjacent nations have caused EU officials to speed up talks about enhancing aerial security throughout European airspace.
