Space Traveler Discloses Emotional Distress Following Deluge of Harassment After Historic Trip
A Vietnamese-American astronaut has spoken candidly about her struggle with mental health after facing a relentless barrage of criticism in the aftermath of a landmark journey to the edge of space.
The 34-year-old activist – celebrated as a researcher and activist – was part of the 11-minute suborbital flight in April, which also included celebrity crewmates.
The much-publicized journey was widely scrutinized by some, who challenged its value and environmental footprint.
Reflecting on the situation, Ms. Nguyen, who was celebrated as the first Vietnamese woman in space, stated the intense backlash eclipsed her moment under an landslide of gendered hatred.
“I told her my depression might last for years,” Ms. Nguyen stated in a public message, describing a supportive conversation from a fellow crew member in the period after the flight.
She characterized the news reports and online discourse as an barrage beyond typical human coping.
“I did not leave Texas for a week, unable to get out of bed,” she wrote. “Even a month on, a phone call ended with me hanging up, weeping uncontrollably.”
Overshadowed by Sexism
The researcher, who has conducted studies in female health science and operated research during the flight, said all her lifelong efforts – from her studies and years of training to the symbolic importance of her heritage – was buried under the tide of gendered attacks.
She is widely recognized for her groundbreaking advocacy protecting the rights of sexual assault survivors.
Her own goal of reaching space was put on hold after being assaulted during her time as a student, leading to a long campaign for accountability.
A Path to Recovery
In the time since fulfilling her dream, she noted the heaviest sorrow is beginning to clear, and she thanked the followers whose kindness helped save her. “You all saved me,” she wrote.
She added that despite the negativity, important benefits had resulted from the mission, such as increased focus on her women's health research and new advocacy opportunities.

The computer-piloted spacecraft launched from Texas in the spring, carrying the all-female team on a short trip that passed the edge of outer space.
