Toy Story 5 Teaser Pits Woody and Buzz Against a Digital Device
It has been 30 years since the original Toy Story movie debuted, launching the animation giant as a leading film company and bringing audiences to iconic characters like the cowboy doll (the actor) and Buzz Lightyear (the voice talent), who are now household names.
Coming in 2026, the fifth installment is set to arrive. The initial preview for Toy Story 5 appeared this week, offering a glimpse into the storyline but keeping fans wondering how it will resolve the conclusion of Toy Story 4.
Bonnie's New Toy: A Digital Device Frightens the Toys
In the teaser reveals Bonnie — who received Andy's toys when he grew up — receiving a brand new toy, one that alarms Woody, Buzz, and the crew. She acquires her first tablet computer, and she is thrilled about it.
Theoretically, the amphibian-inspired device will come to life just like Bonnie's other toys. However, the toys seem to view it as a danger intending to supplant them, which it probably is.
The Cowboy's Comeback: Unanswered Questions from Toy Story 4
An element the trailer doesn't touch on is why the sheriff is back with his companions in Bonnie's room. The end of Toy Story 4 saw him embark on a new adventure with Bo Peep (the actress), traveling with a fair and assisting giveaway items find good homes.
Certainly, the filmmakers will address the aftermath of Toy Story 4 in the movie. Witnessing him show up in Bonnie's room without warning is somewhat puzzling, however. It also raises questions whether Bo Peep will have returned with Woody. And where is Duke Caboom (the star)?
Continuity from the Last Installment
Fortunately, some aspects are carrying over from the earlier movie. The final act Woody did before departing for his new life was pass his sheriff badge to Jessie (the voice actor), leaving her as the leader of the toy domain. The clip displays the insignia attached to her shirt.
Hopefully she is still the driving force among the group.
Toy Story 5 debuts on the scheduled date.
